The GARTENDEK XL-02 is the largest artificial stone in the GARTENDEK range — a massive hollow flat slab designed to conceal the widest ground-level utility installations while functioning as a landscape-defining horizontal boulder accent. Shaped to replicate an enormous flat field stone naturally embedded in the ground, it covers oversized manhole covers (DN800+), septic hatches with wide concrete frames, irrigation valve clusters, large junction boxes, and similar wide installations — replacing industrial visual disorder with a calm, geological presence.
At 23.50 kg and 155 × 105 cm, the XL-02 holds two absolute records in the entire GARTENDEK range: the largest exterior footprint (~1.63 m²) and — shared with XL-04 — the maximum interior coverage diameter of ø 90 cm. The flat, elongated, asymmetric silhouette (~15 cm at the edges, ~26 cm at the central peak, L:W ratio 1.48:1) creates the impression of an enormous glacial erratic — the kind of field stone too large to have ever been moved by human hands.
The XL-02 shares its ø 90 cm with XL-04, but delivers that coverage within a 52% larger body (1.63 m² vs 1.07 m²). This makes it the model for situations where the utility object is surrounded by a wide zone of disturbed ground, concrete aprons, auxiliary pipes, and frames — everything disappears under a single stone.
Two people position the stone in under five minutes on any surface — grass, gravel, soil, or paving. No tools, no foundation, no permanent changes. Equipment access requires only one person: lift or tilt the stone, inspect or service the concealed installation, and lower it back. The surface is formed from natural marble chips embedded in a marine-grade ISO/NPG gelcoat, available in two colors — Gray and Red — with the texture and color variation of a real granite field stone.
Some utility installations are not just wide — they are wide and surrounded by extensive disturbed zones. A large concrete manhole cover (DN800 or larger) sits flush with the lawn, but its concrete frame, apron, and the ring of excavated soil extend far beyond the cover itself. An oversized septic inspection hatch (ø 70–85 cm) with a wide concrete surround creates a large industrial zone in the middle of the garden. A cluster of irrigation main valves, manifolds, and pipe connections spreads across a wide area that no single compact stone can cover.
These wide infrastructure zones create a specific design problem. The ø 80 cm coverage class (XL-01, M-03, L-01) cannot reach the edges. Even within the ø 90 cm class, the compact XL-04 (104 × 103 cm = 1.07 m²) covers the core object but may leave surrounding frames, aprons, and auxiliary infrastructure exposed.
The XL-02 resolves this with maximum dimensions on every axis. At 155 × 105 cm and only 26 cm peak height, it lies across the lawn like a massive flat field stone that has always been there. The 1.63 m² base area — the largest in the entire GARTENDEK range — covers not only the utility object itself but its frame, concrete apron, surrounding pipes, the disturbed soil ring, and the zone of disrupted lawn. One stone, one visual solution.
Natural flat stones of comparable dimensions weigh 800–1,500 kg and require heavy machinery. Budget plastic covers in this size category essentially do not exist — the few available are structurally inadequate. The XL-02 bridges this gap: realistic stone appearance, engineered composite strength, and a weight that two people can handle.
The XL-02 is a hollow shell with a massive wide profile — 155 × 105 cm at the base, rising from approximately 15 cm at the edges to 26 cm at the central peak. The interior provides a usable coverage diameter of ~90 cm — the maximum in the GARTENDEK range.
Installation takes under five minutes. Place the stone directly over the target object on any surface. No anchoring, no foundation, no tools. The massive base area (1.63 m²) provides excellent natural ground contact and stability.
Transport and placement require two people — at 23.50 kg and 155 cm length, comfortable handling needs two adults. Equipment access requires only one person — lift or tilt the stone to inspect or service the concealed installation, then lower it back. This is the key operational distinction for daily use.
Wind consideration — the large flat surface area (1.63 m²) can catch wind from below in exposed locations. In such cases, landscape anchoring stakes at the perimeter provide additional security, though this is not mandatory for most residential installations.
Seasonal behavior is neutral. The fiberglass composite structure does not absorb water, does not expand or contract meaningfully with temperature changes, and tolerates a continuous operating range from −30 °C to +60 °C. The stone performs identically in summer heat, autumn rain, and winter frost. It does not need to be removed, covered, or stored during any season.
Base contact — the stone has a non-sealed base and rests directly on the ground surface. It is not hermetically sealed; natural micro air exchange between the interior cavity and the surrounding environment is possible through the ground contact zone.
The XL-02 is constructed from a multi-layer fiberglass composite (GFK) — the same class of material used in boat hull construction, chosen for its strength-to-weight ratio and long-term weather resistance.
The outer surface is a marble chip and marble powder gelcoat of the ISO/NPG class. The color is not painted, printed, or applied as a film. Natural stone chips and stone dust of different colors are mixed directly into the gelcoat compound during manufacturing. The color and grain are embedded in the material itself, producing a surface that ages gracefully rather than peeling, flaking, or fading.
The product is handcrafted (In Handarbeit gefertigt) — color and dimensional deviations of 3–5 cm are within normal range and contribute to the natural stone appearance.

The XL-02 occupies a position that neither extreme can reach: far lighter and more practical than a natural flat stone of the same dimensions, far more durable and visually convincing than budget plastic — and uniquely combining a hollow interior with a load-bearing, marine-grade composite shell at a scale that no alternative product offers.
Maintenance is minimal. Clean occasionally with water and a soft brush. No sealing, repainting, or chemical treatment is ever required.
Large manhole cover concealment (DN800+)
The primary XL-02 application. A large concrete or cast-iron manhole cover (DN800 or larger) with a wide concrete frame and apron — the 155 × 105 cm base area hides the cover, frame, apron, surrounding pipes, and the entire ring of disturbed lawn. The ø 90 cm interior accommodates the widest residential covers.
Oversized septic hatch coverage
An oversized septic tank inspection hatch (ø 70–85 cm) with a wide surrounding concrete frame assembly — XL-02's 1.63 m² footprint hides both the hatch and the entire frame structure, sitting naturally at ground level.
Irrigation valve cluster concealment
A cluster of irrigation main valve boxes, manifolds, and pipe connections spread across a wide area (up to ø 85 cm aggregate) — a single XL-02 covers the entire utility zone. Equipment remains accessible at any time.
Large underground distribution boxes
Cable, telecom, or gas distribution boxes and multi-compartment junction cabinets at grade level — the 155 × 105 cm footprint covers even large multi-section installations and their surrounding disturbed ground.
Wide well casing concealment
A sealed well casing with a wide concrete collar protruding 10–20 cm above grade — XL-02 covers the casing, collar, and surrounding disturbed soil within its 1.63 m² base area.
Large tree stump concealment
A cut tree stump (ø 75–85 cm) at near-ground level — the massive flat slab hides the stump, root plate, and the ring of disturbed soil around it, restoring a clean lawn line.
Utility cluster coverage
A grouping of garden utilities — electrical outlet box + water tap + irrigation valves — spread across a wide zone. One XL-02 covers the entire cluster instead of requiring multiple smaller stones.
Decorative landscape-defining accent
The 155 × 105 cm flat slab creates the impression of an enormous embedded glacial erratic — a landscape-defining centerpiece at property boundaries, beside large water features, or as the dominant focal point in expansive lawn areas. Many owners use it purely for decoration, without any concealment purpose.
The XL-02 is the flagship model of the XL-series and the largest artificial stone in the entire GARTENDEK range. It holds two absolute records: the largest exterior footprint (155 × 105 cm = ~1.63 m²) and the maximum interior coverage diameter ø 90 cm (shared with XL-04).
The critical comparison within the ø 90 cm class:
| Model | Series | Coverage ø | Height | Footprint | Weight | Shape | Best for |
| XL-04 | XL | 90 cm | 23 cm | ~1.07 m² | 15.50 kg | Compact near-square slab | ø 90 cm in smallest body |
| XL-02 | XL | 90 cm | 26 cm | ~1.63 m² | 23.50 kg | Massive wide flat elongated slab | Maximum total-area concealment |
Both models provide ø 90 cm interior coverage. The selection parameter is total area to conceal:
- XL-04 (1.07 m²) — the object fits within ø 90 cm with minimal surrounding infrastructure. Compact, lighter, more affordable.
- XL-02 (1.63 m²) — the utility zone extends well beyond ø 90 cm: wide frames, concrete aprons, pipe clusters. XL-02 covers everything in one piece.
For comparison with smaller coverage diameters:
| Model | Series | Coverage ø | Height | Footprint | Shape | Best for |
| XL-01 | XL | 80 cm | 23 cm | ~1.21 m² | Wide flat elongated slab | Wide flat objects (≤ ~18–20 cm), ø ≤ 80 cm |
| XL-02 | XL | 90 cm | 26 cm | ~1.63 m² | Massive wide flat elongated slab | Widest objects + max area concealment |
| XL-04 | XL | 90 cm | 23 cm | ~1.07 m² | Compact near-square slab | ø 90 cm in compact format |
Choose the XL-02 when:
- The object to conceal exceeds ø 80 cm, requiring the ø 90 cm class
- The surrounding infrastructure zone (frames, aprons, pipes) requires maximum footprint coverage
- You need the largest possible single stone to eliminate all visible utility elements in one piece
- A landscape-defining massive boulder accent is desired
Consider a different model when:
- The object fits within ø 90 cm with minimal surrounding infrastructure — XL-04 (compact, lighter, €362.25 vs €551.89)
- The target object is ≤ ø 80 cm — XL-01 (ø 80 cm, €352.94) is more economical
- The target object is taller than ~21–23 cm — no current XL model covers this; consider L-series (heights up to 45 cm, ø up to 80 cm)
The XL-02 works as a standalone landscape centerpiece or as part of a multi-stone arrangement combining massive XL slabs with upright S, M, or L boulders for a varied, natural-looking stone grouping.
